Mike Jenkins at Dowlais Primary School

Merthyr’s very own resident author Mike Jenkins took some time out of his busy schedule to come and spend some time up with local school children at Dowlais Primary School last week.

Figure-heading the Volunteer Reading Mentor Scheme run by the Stephens and George Centenary Charitable Trust, Mr Jenkins stood for some photographs with some of the school children, read to them from some of his books and poems and answered questions about life as a famous writer.

"As a former teacher with over 30 years experience, and as a writer for children, I can say categorically that any help pupils have with their reading is highly beneficial. This scheme certainly provides that."

So a huge thanks to Mike Jenkins for being involved with the fantastic work our Reading Mentors do. If being a Reading Mentor and changing the lives of young people in the local community sounds like something that you could do then PLEASE contact us here at the Trust; we’d love to have you on board!
